Welcome to the Capra Gia Web site, and our e-home for our fine, hand-made artisnal goat milk products. In these pages, you will be able to learn more about our products, our people, our farm and our mission. Our website is currently under construction (and probably always will be!) so bear with us and keep checking back often for updates and changes. Our People The Capra Gia Cheese Company group was drawn together by their strong belief in providing people with fresh, healthy products produced on farms that practice responsible and sustainable agricultural practices, and in educating consumers throughout each step of the process. Each of the friends brought to the Capra table something unique - from a broad knowledge and application of sustainable practices, to national award-winning cheese making, to extensive dairy goat management, to a law degree - all of which mix together with just a little bit of insanity to make Georgia's best goat milk products. Our Philosophy - Business In developing our business plan, and in the construction of our facilities, we put emphasis on education, accessability and responsible agricultural practices. Our farm and processing plant will host a wide array of educational opportunities, tours and events. Our plant is handicap accessible, and meets ADA guidelines. Our farm is in the process of setting up to practice grazing rotation in our goat-specific planted pastures and all organic wastes are composted and used for plant growth. Our processing plant was constructed using green methods, with the upmost care taken to reduce the impact on our environment. We eventually plan to utilize both solar and wind power to reduce that footprint even further. Our Philosophy - Animals The humane treatment of our animals is of upmost importance to our operation. Habitats, behaviors and diets of the animals are as natural as possible. We do not employ the use of artificial hormones or feed additives. We use a holistic approach to animal care whenever practical. Our goats are various breeds, and are in widely varying stages in their life cycles, and we take care to treat each one as an individual and are sensitive to her unique needs as such. Our Name and Logo Our name is a combination of Capra, or Latin for "goat" as well as the genus of goats (Capra hircus). Gia is a nickname (albeit not well known :)) for Georgia. Our Logo is derived from a 1806 book on Astrology by Ebenezer Sibly. The goat is the Zodiac sign for Capricorns. Ironically, both Jenny and Mark, our most experienced goat-folks are both Capricorns :) Our Mission Our mission is to produce wholesome, natural products; to nurture and uplift the people, animals and plants who work together to provide these products; to further share this privilege and knowledge with others who are like-minded; to eliminate barriers and disregard labels.
